“The I Ching - Ancient Oracle of the East” with Terence Moore

Saturday 5 April 2025

He has previously run various courses on a wide range of topics, which has included sessions on how to read the Ancient Chinese Classic – “The I Ching”. On this occasion, he will be presenting a half an hour introduction, with reference to specially recommended books on the topic.

In brief, the I Ching offers us all a simple way to understand how best to navigate the constant changes around us. It is over five thousand years old; in fact, it is the oldest book in the world, and is said to contain within it the reasons for everything.

In our modern world, where we are faced with so many uncertainties, anxieties and concerns, an informed reading of the I Ching can be enormously helpful, inspirational and can potentially offer us a way forward through these troubled times.

“Magazine The Band: A Biography” with Helen Chase

Saturday 31st May 2025

2pm to 2.30pm

Free Entrance

Helen will be talking about her recently published (16 May 2025) book which tells the story of the iconic band formed by Howard Devoto when he left the Buzzcocks. This revised and updated edition brings the story bang up-to-date. Already tired of the thrash and unrelenting nature of punk rock, Devoto wanted to combine the elements of avant-garde and pop. This he did with ‘Shot by Both Sides’, ‘the best rock & roll record of 1978, punk or otherwise’ (Rolling Stone) followed by their first album Real Life.

Three more equally acclaimed albums followed before Magazine disbanded. With unique access to the band and interviews with the great and the good of the 1980s and iconic musicians of today, Helen presents a riveting insight into the world of punk and beyond. Placing the band in the context of the Manchester music scene she explains why the band has such a solid fan-base and why Magazine had decided to re-form for live gigs some 30 years since they first took to the stage.

Helen Chase is an author and biographer. A key element of Helen’s writing is based on her in-depth and personal interviews with band members, managers, record company execs, producers, designers and fans. Helen remains a devoted fan.

Back Up North with Ally Shepherd

Saturday 21 June 2025

(Independent Bookshop Week)

2 to 2.30pm

free, drop-in

Ally Shepherd is a teacher, researcher, writer, and Cestrian.

After a decade overseas, Ally got stuck back in Chester during the pandemic.

She promptly became a born-again Northerner and, probably annoyingly, wanted to tell the world. Documenting her journey to understand herself through the region in which she grew up, she explores questions in her new nonfiction book BACK UP NORTH, such as: Is there still a North/South divide? Was she descended from a Pendle witch?

Why does Liverpool have a slavery museum? What’s with Scouse and Geordie accents? Where are Northern women’s stories in TV, film, and literature? And is it okay to eat chips, cheese and gravy? (Spoiler: The answer to the last question is ‘yes’). Drawing on history, politics, pop culture, and folklore – as well as family stories from Lancashire, and an education in Yorkshire – Back Up North explores the region’s diverse legacy of food, music, literature, dialect, social change and superstition.

Author Event with Geoff Nelder

Saturday 12 July 2025

2-2.30pm

free entrance, drop-in

Geoff will be reading from his novella, SUPPOSE WE and from INCREMENTAL, a collection of short stories.

Geoff taught at Queen's Park High in Chester but now lives in Greater Manchester. SUPPOSE WE, his 8th book, is a surreal science fiction. The indie press publisher, LL-Publications commissioned Geoff to bring back the sense of wonder, exploration and adventure in sci fi.

He does this by crashlanding a spaceship on a faraway planet. They need help from the locals, but they are a million years ahead of Earth and ignore them. How do they survive and persuade the superior natives to help them?

SUPPOSE WE is as far as we know the only science fiction written by a long-time vegan with a vegan main character on a vegan planet, or at least one free from predators larger than insects!

INCREMENTAL: a small but regular increase in value or worth. It can be decremental too.

These short bursts of fiction are a smorgasbord of the surreal – science fiction, horror, weird or just humorous.

A pothole doubles in size daily. How long before it swallows the Earth, followed by this universe?

A sound is heard all over the world and it is getting louder.

Imagine waking up on the ceiling, or realising that you’re not an amnesiac, but a girl’s imaginary friend.

An asteroid is diverted from closing in on Earth, but it keeps coming back.

A grape-sized meteorite hits a London house at 3:15 every day.

“Some of these stories are more mental than incremental - all wonderful.” Limnisa Writers’ Retreat, Greece.

‘A feast of Kafka-esque incremental tales, to be ‘literally’ devoured one after the other…’ Mark Iles author of the Pride of Lions #1 best-selling sci fi book.

Poetry with Andy Porter

Saturday 2nd August 2025

2 – 2.30pm

free, drop-in

Andy is a Chester based poet. He started writing poetry consistently in 2020 and has completed over 200 mostly satirical and humorous poems. A Mancunian now living in rural Cheshire, Andy’s observational work has the feel of the unlikely progeny of a liaison between John Cooper Clarke and Pam Ayres.

A scriptwriter, producer and director, he ran his own commercial production company for thirty years. In 2012 he collaborated with his nephew, the playwright, Simon Stephens to produce and co-direct “Sea Wall”, a short film starring Andrew Scott. The film, which has featured in the New York Times, Toronto Star, The Stage Door and on BBC Radio 4’s World at One, has a global fanbase and enjoyed a renaissance during COVID with its central themes of love, loss, faith and hope.

Andy’s debut poetry collection, “Neighbour’s Got a New Hot Tub” was launched on July 24, 2025 by independent Irish publisher, Luain Press.

“These entertaining, high-spirited poems are packed with humour and crafted rhyme. Andy Porter has a natural facility for memorable words, phrases and titles to make you smile” Greg Freeman, Write Out Loud

“Funny, fab images, joyous juxtapositions” Neil Mullarkey, Co-founder, The Comedy Store

BE CRAYJUST: REAL LIFE MOTIVATION BY REAL LIFE PEOPLE is a well-being book of affirmations, all written by children aged 8-15, published and collated by Sharon Corbett.

Be Crayjust with Sharon Corbett

Saturday 16 August 2025

2 - 3pm

Free, drop-in

Sharon delivers life-story themed, well-being workshops to local businesses and community groups, as well as working with schools, colleges and universities on the Picture This project aimed at developing an improved sense of self-worth, self-belief and self-confidence.

PICTURE THIS PROJECT

Devised by Sharon in 2010, Picture This, is a combined arts project integrating photography and creative life-writing to empower young people to consider how they might achieve their ambitions in the future. Using photographs to represent life and story to validate and authenticate their sense of self, pupils participate in a series of creative workshops based around the themes of aspiration, inspiration and motivation. The photographs and stories are then exhibited as framed poster prints at a culmination event held at a local university campus.

Amazed by the standard of work produced in the workshops, Sharon decided to compile some of the writings into a book, to create an opportunity for everyone to feel inspired and motivated by the words of these young people.

‘The pupils thoroughly enjoy being part of the project and this book enables their thoughts and feelings to be made available to a wider audience. Their words are truly inspirational and you would never know they were written by children as young as eight! They write from their hearts with honesty and conviction, and what they say is insightful and encouraging; a future generation filled with hope, with a bright and positive outlook.’ SC

‘My son wanted me to let you know how the project has helped him and motivated him as he has now realised that anything is possible. As his mum I want to thank you as it’s made me want to do what I can for him to aim higher, to help him, and to keep motivating him. From a very socially shy boy who would not speak up when he wanted to take part in things, he now understands what it is he needs to do to aim for his goals; it's no longer I can't, but I can.’ CC

The affirmations in this book are linked to the opportunity of discovery; not just of the people we have been or are now, but of the people we will become. They instil a sense of continuation, encourage a realm of future possibilities and remind us that opportunities for success and achievement are available to all of us. When we think about our life events with some purpose, we quite naturally discover ourselves. Where will your story take you now?

During this event, Sharon will share some of her insights from the Picture This project and her book and also include visitors in some of the activities from the creative sessions, along with the opportunity to write their own affirmations.

Upcoming Events at books on the walls (September)

In Conversation with Jill Hawkins, Co-Founder of Muceum Magazine

Saturday 6 September 2025

2 - 2.30pm

Free, drop-in

Jill is co-founder of Muceum, a new magazine that aims to change the relationships we have with fashion, style and materials. Muceum was  created between Denmark and the UK by Sanne Moth, a fashion designer, and Jill, a trend researcher / stylist / psychologist, two creatives who want to help people fall back in love with fashion’s creativity, artistry, craft and meaning.

Muceum focuses on the beauty of materials and processes, challenging ingrained ways of thinking about fashion and clothing, shifting the emphasis to healthier, more considered relationships and experiences with what we wear and how it’s made.

Combining beautiful visuals with articles, essays and poetry on issues that surround fashion and creativity, issue #1 explores the concept of generosity in design. It looks at bioactive materials (a milk yarn dress!); clothing for self-care and neurodiversity; relationships with nakedness and movement; and even the concept of ‘pyntesyg’ – an untranslatable Danish word that means ‘adorning yourself sick / too much’.

Jill will be here to talk about the magazine, its formation, process and intention, and her work as a trend researcher and a creative who wears many ‘hats’. Jill is fun and friendly, so this will be a lovely event!

Author Event with Giada Nizzoli

Saturday 13 September 2025

2.00pm – 2.30pm

Free, drop-in

Giadia is an author, poet, marketing message mentor and strategist, born in the 90s with an inexplicable obsession for the 80s. She’s Italian but moved to the UK when she was nineteen, and after living in London and graduating in Creative & Media Writing in Portsmouth, she now considers Chester her adoptive hometown.

She self-published her first poetry book, Will-o’-the-Wisps, in 2020 and a magical realism short story collection, Set in Marble, in 2021.

In 2023, Querencia Press published her poetry pamphlet, Ghost Hometowns. Steeped in nostalgia and memorable imagery, it takes you from sunny but decadent Italian landscapes to the cold streets of London, full of unseizable possibilities. Ghost Hometowns explores the disorienting feeling of not knowing where you belong.

Written from a migrant's perspective, it's a doomed quest for a home in your birth country, abroad and even with family sharing opposite views. Let it guide you through your own, unescapable journey.

In Conversation with Paul Brand, author of Kick It! The Definitive Football Mixtape (2024) followed by The Music of Five Continents and Half A Dozen Small Islands with Dave Sheekey from Circl8 Radio

Sunday 28 September 2025

2 – 4pm

Free, drop-in

Paul Brand lives in Chester's Garden Quarter but grew up on the Essex/East London borders, lumbering him with a life sentence supporting West Ham.

His first book, Fortune's Always Hiding: From Stratford to Seville (2023), chronicles the club's modern history from a fan's eye-view, while his second book, Inside the Academy: The Hopes, Highs and Heartbreaks of West Ham United's Youth (2024), reveals the journeys of those who had the potential but didn't quite make the step up from academy to Premier League.

His hat-trick effort is one for the neutral fans. Kick It! The Definitive Football Mixtape (2024) explores the synergy between the football and music industries and tells the stories behind the songs, including how 'You'll Never Walk Alone' nearly became an Old Trafford favourite. David Baddiel has called it "A brilliant ride through the idiosyncratically British sub-culture that is the football pop song", although he also took the author to task for describing 'World in Motion' as sonically superior to 'Three Lions'!

Paul will be playing and talking about some of the international hits featured in the book, so come along to have your life enriched by Los Ramblers' original World Cup anthem 'El Rock del Mundial', Super Furry Animals' brilliantly bonkers 'Bing Bong', and a USA '94 mash-up between the Village People and Die Deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft.

Circl8 Radio began during the lockdown of 2020, and by June, Circl8 Radio was on the webwaves, dedicated to showcasing regional music talent.

Circl8, stands for Chester Internet Radio Community Live, with the ‘8’ emphasising  round-the-clock commitment to broadcasting. Co-chaired by Dan Schott and the well-known music fan and DJ Kenny Cunningham, their station thrives with the support of approximately 30 passionate volunteers.

Dave Sheekey is one of the passionate volunteers, and you can listen to him playing The Music of Five Continents and Half A Dozen Small Islands once a month, on the second Tuesday night at 9pm.

Saturday 4th October 2025

2 - 2.30pm

Free, drop-in

Samantha grew up in Wrexham with her family who always encouraged her to succeed. She decided to begin writing during the pandemic after her own mental health deteriorated significantly due to past trauma of being discriminated against from having a disability.

SILENCED. (released Saturday 27th September 2025), looks deeper into disability's relationship to mental health and whether this connection is due to environmental, personal or social factors, with kind contributions from Lesley Griffiths, MS for Wrexham and Counsellor Beryl Blackmore, Wrexham Mayor 2024-2025 alongside many others.

Samantha's first two books, CP Isn’t Me and Disabling Ableism shine a spotlight on disability and how perceptions of disability need to change for the better.

CP Isn’t Me was released in December 2022, and is part autobiographical, part factual and speaks about her own personal experiences of living with mild Cerebral Palsy and the discrimination that she has faced from people in society because of her disability.

Disabling Ableism is a generalised view of disability through the eyes of society with kind contributions from Lesley Griffiths, MS for Wrexham and Kerry Evans, Disability Liaison Officer at Wrexham AFC alongside many others.

The Noose of Samuel Burrows with Author Nick Kevern

In 1835, Samuel Burrows was slowly dying at his Brook Street home. The 63 year-old was all alone until Reverend Clarke arrived. He would be Burrows's only visitor during his final week of life. Desperate to save his soul, Clarke was eager to persuade a stubborn Burrows to repent his sins before the eyes of the lord. But how do you save the soul of Chester's notorious hangman? A man who fully believed in the rule of law and took pleasure in seeing the condemned hang by his own hands.

The Noose of Samuel Burrows takes us back to Georgian Chester and explores the life & times of Chester's forgotten executioner. For the first time, his life is fully explored by social historian Nick Kevern from his days as a butcher at the shambles in Northgate Street to his many executions above the gatehouse of New City Gaol. Along the way, Kevern also examines the Georgian justice system and reveals the stories of those who found their way to Burrows' gallows.

Nick will reveal more about Burrows' life at this talk. You will also be able to get copies of the book and bottles of Burrows Noose, a English Pale Ale brewed by Weetwood Ales.

Author Event with Ursula Martin, One Woman Walks Wales

Saturday 1st November 2025

2 – 2.30pm

Having returned home for Christmas from time out travelling in Europe, what should have been a routine trip to the doctor left 31 year old Ursula with a diagnosis of Stage 1A Ovarian cancer. Only 36% of all UK women diagnosed with ovarian cancer will still be alive 5 years later.

Determined not to sink into self-pity Ursula decided that she would continue her travels and walk between her home in mid Wales and hospital appointments in Bristol. This decision led to her plan to walk Wales publicising the need for early detection for the disease which kills far too many patients due to ignorance of symptoms.

In the 17 months it took to walk Wales, Ursula’s journey took her across, around, up, over and through all of Wales from beaches to mountains, farms to urban sprawl. She met many sheep and a surprising number of walkers keen to accompany her for part of her journey. Ursula raised over £11,000 for her two chosen charities.

One Woman Walks Wales is a story of determination, tears and laughter, joy and pain, and a fascinating insight into not just one woman during a testing time, but a country, its landscape and its people. It is published by Honno Press, an independent co-operative press run by women and committed to bringing you the best in Welsh women's writing.

Author Event with Chris Pearson

Saturday 29 November, 2-2.30pm

Collared

Dogs are our constant companions: models of loyalty and unconditional love for millions around the world. But these beloved animals are much more than just our pets - and our shared history is far richer and more complex than you might assume. Historian and dog lover Chris Pearson reveals how the shifting fortunes of dogs hold a mirror to our changing society.

Wherever humans have gone, dogs have followed, changing size, appearance and even jobs along the way - from the forests of medieval Europe, where greyhounds chased down game for royalty, to the frontlines of twentieth-century conflicts, where dogs carried messages and hauled gun carriages.Despite vast social change, however, the power of the human-canine bond has never diminished.

Chris will also be signing copies of his book, newly released in paperback (6 November 2025, Profile Books)
